On April 24th, Ethan Hoying and seven other seminarians in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati were ordained transitional deacons. They are now public witnesses to Jesus in the Order of Deacons. Transitional deacons cannot hear confessions, confirm, or anoint the sick. They do have faculties to baptize, assist at a simple nuptial ceremony, and to conduct the Rite of Committal at a cemetery following the funeral Mass. There are three promises made by transitional deacons: to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, Obedience, and Celibacy. Both transitional and
permanent deacons make a promise to obey their bishop and his successors. We are excited to report that Deacon Hoying will be with us at St. Ann for most of the summer. Please keep him and all newly-ordained transitional deacons in your prayers.
