We often miss or overlook the blessings that God has bestowed on us and the opportunity that we – as Catholics – have to receive our Lord in the Mass. We have an advantage that demands more of us, but we also have the Lord who is there with us to be our companion in life. When we find life overwhelming, it will help to remember the words of former Archbishop of Cincinnati (1972-1982), the late Joseph Cardinal Bernadin:
“What I would like to leave behind is a simple prayer that each of you may find what I have found – God’s special gift to us all: the gift of peace. When we are at peace, we find the freedom to be most fully who we are, even in the worst of times. We let go of what is nonessential and embrace what is essential. We empty ourselves so that God may more fully work within us. And we become instruments in the hands of the Lord.”
A Gift of Peace Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then, the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7
